We Were There features the unique experiences of women in the predominantly male world of the Maze and Long Kesh Prison, which was the largest prison in Europe during the Troubles in Northern Ireland. The materiality of the now ghostly, empty site provides stimulus for the memories of the participants, who include probation officers, teachers and prisoners’ relatives. Using a walk and talk approach, the film explores the impact of imprisonment on female relatives as well as the important contribution of the female education and probation staff on the emerging peace process.
