Indian or not Indian - A French undocumented immigrant in India, married to a Bengali village woman exemplifies questions about integration, identity and cross culture.

Kurdish Lover - A family portrait that depicts the miseries of war and exile.

Women Moving Forward - Follows Latin American women who have migrated to Spain and become domestic workers.

Anthropology is increasingly being recognised by NGOS and government bodies such as an invaluable means of gathering local knowledge. These films explore some of the topics around Urbanisation, Tourism and Change.

The Marble Village - A portrait of those left behind in a rural village in Romania that has been largely abandoned due to urbanisation.

Vultures of Tibet - A private burial ritual of Tibetan dead is becoming a tourist attraction through the increasing power of Chinese Modernisation.

Tracks Across Sands: Overture - After reclaiming back their a portion of their land, San Bushmen relate what the land and this new history has meant for them.

Rain in the Mirror  - Follows Sonam’s journey to manhood through the conflicting milieus of tradition and modernity in India.

Lon Marum: People of the Volcano - The relationship between indigenous knowledge and modern science at the scene of one of the World's most active volcanoes.

Cotton for my Shroud - Cotton-growing farmers in India relationship with nature is threatened by commercial and mercenary interests, it plays havoc in their lives.

Caught up in the Net - The struggle between Porto Formoso's fishing community who need new infrastructure and those support the port's natural beauty, and therefore its tourist potential.

Rockerill - Rekindling the Fire - Saved from demolition, ‘les Forges de la Providence’, has been turned into a symbol of renaissance and rehabilitation.

Yanomami: From Machetes to Mobile Phones - As the outside world encroaches into Yanomami land, the tension between these two worlds is revealed through the reconciliation between traditions and a new attraction to commoditiesl.

God is a Liar: Tradition and Change in Turkana - Nomadic pastoralists have seen many changes in their relationship with the environment, caused by God and outsiders who challenge their self-reliance.

Man Vila -The film follows a families struggle against the booming tourism economy in Vanuatu that is threatening their lifestyle and social habits.

Orania - The 800 white Afrikaners who inhabit Orania are striving to create a "cultural homeland" outside of the post-apartheid transformation of a new South Africa from which it feels under threat.

The Whistling Village -Due to difficult terrain and its remoteness, Kuskoy has a long tradition of whistling as a means of communication which has managed to survive despite powerful challenges from modern technology. 

Reflection - A Brazilian death cult battles to safeguard a strict code of rules and ethics in the 21st century.

Voices from the Tundra - With only two elderly Yukagirs still master the full skill of their language, this film offers an intimate portrait to try and keep it alive.

Long Live Bharatmata - The Bharatmata theatre is an iconic reminder of a colourful working class culture which is now on the decline in Mumbai.

Europaland: A Journey into Popular Cameroonian Imagination - broaches the issue of the image of Europe of young Cameroonians.

Colourful Thinking: Four Artists - Explores how Turkish artists living and working in The Netherlands express their identity through their artwork.

Gods and Kings  - An eerie masquerade festival in a Guatemalan moutnain village which confronts a strange history.

The Act of Killing  - A journey into the memories and imaginations of genocide perpetrators in Indonesia, offering insight into the minds of mass killers.

Swimming in Space - Links different perspectives on problems anchored in the social, political and economic life of Lubumashi, DRC.

When Spirits Ride Their Horses - The film explores the life of a women who devotes her life to Zar spirits. 

Gnawa - Music and Beyond explores a music which was originally created to heal.

Alapana - Four Views of Movement in Carnatic Music - An embodied perspective on Carnatic music, using animation and visual effects to direct the viewer’s attention to physical motion in the musical performance.

The Whistling Village - In this Turkish 'Bird Village' whistling is a form of communication for over 400 years.

Reflection - explores the hardhship of initiating children into a death cult in Brazil.

Slow Walker -  'Isicathamiya' is a music and dance competition created during apartheid by South African migrant workers.

Memory Objects, Memory Dialogues  - A poignant and humorous glimpse into how Romanians are currently looking back at their communist past.

The films observe life in different areas of India, from Gujarat, to Delhi and covers topics from women’s rights, to religious ceremonies, and agriculture.

Thursday 13th June:

Playing with Nan - The story of a young Nepali man who migrated to work in a Nepali restaurant in northern Japan.

Delhi at Eleven - An experimental youth project from David MacDougall which gives four young filmmakers the chance to show us their special perspective on Indian family and working life.

Friday 14th June:

Himself He Cooks - In the Golden Temple in Amritsar hundreds of volunteers prepare 100 000 free meals each day.

Long Live Bharatmata - Bharatmata Cinema is one of the few remaining theatres that plays only Marathi films,an iconic reminder of a colourful working class culture which is now on the decline in Mumbai.

Where is Billet? - The film takes an auto-ethnographic perspective on a longstanding fantasy formation of South Asian culture: billet.

Unravel - Follows the Western world’s least wanted clothes, on a journey across Northern India.

Cotton for my Shroud - Life of the cotton-growing community of farmers in India is threatened by commercial and mercenary interest.

Salma - Kim Longinotto obseves the intimate story of a young girl locked up by her family and forced into a marriage who found salvation through Tamil poetry.

The films which will be screened cover a variety of subjects which affect Central and South American communities today, including; women’s rights campaigns, religious persecution, indigenous and urban culture, traditional festivals, historical views of slavery and modern day racism.

Venezuela:

Yanomami: From Machetes to Mobile Phones - The filmmakers return after ten years to document how Yanomami customs and traditions becomes difficult to reconcile with their attraction to the modern world.

Brazil:

Savouring Brazilian Fruits - Inhabitants from the city of Salvador show how to enjoy to the full their favourite fruits from the local markets.

Reflection- A death cult that are battling to safeguard a strict code of rules and ethics in the 21st century.

Grammar of Happiness - Insight into the language of the Amazonian Pirahã tribe.

Mexico:

Silvestre Pantaléon - Traditional skills and disappearing rituals in the Nahuatl speaking village in Guerrero.

Gods and Kings - A festival that confronts a strange history linking Guatemala with the US, magic with pop culture, and religion.

Anthropology of Health and Well-being http://raifilmfest.org.uk/film/festival/2013/component/content/article/2-programme/195-film-strand-health-and-well-being The issue of health and well-being has become increasingly important within anthropology, as its research is more frequently used within medical studies and development programs focusing on healthcare. This has made the Anthropology of Health one of the most applied areas of anthropology today. This area of anthropology examines how different societies deal with worldwide health concerns, the history of these concerns and what impact they have on the future of their societies. Among other topics, it looks at disability, fertility, disease, treatment, traditional healing and strongly links to the anthropology of development where the question of world health is often debated, as well as the implementing of health care policies.

Over the course of the festival the following films will be screened, all of which examine a variety of central issues within the anthropology of health and well-being.
 
One More Chance - An intimate portrayal into a family whose lives have been changed by HIV/Aids in Papua New Guinea.
 
Descending with Angels - A film about Islamic exorcisms and psychiatric healthcare in Denmark.
 
Gnawa, Music and Beyond - An ethnography into Gnawa music and its orginal purpose of healing.
 
Eggs for Later - A personal account into a woman's struggle with her biological clock.
 
Expecting the Child - The film follows Phoebe as she demonstrates that birth within Inuit communities is bringing back life to the villages.
 
The Guest - A Danish surrogate mother dealing with social norms and possible condemnation expresses motivational factors, ethical considerations and thoughts about motherhood.
 
Algorithms - A documentary on the thriving but little known world of Blind Chess in India.
