Ghanahas one of the liveliest traditions of bead making and bead wearing anywhere in Africa today.  In Ghana, beads embody multiple natures: they have measurable monetary and symbolic value, produce aesthetic and sensual pleasure, and facilitate important cultural events.  Everyone in Ghana wears beads; they are at once ubiquitous and highly personal.  But some beads, and some events, are distinctive.  Filmed during Dipo, the female initiation ceremony of the Krobo people of southern Ghana, beadmakers, scholars, traders, and young female initiates discuss the value, meaning, historical significance, and future of glass beads and glass beadmaking in Ghana.
