Khue, a Buddhist monk, the clown Phong and a young prostitute reflect on their personal experiences during three different periods of Vietnamese history - French colonialism, the Vietnam War and the current period of globalisation. The protagonists' fragmented memories draw a picture of day-to-day life but also deal with social changes of the past 70 years. Taken together, they suggest an image of Hanoi teetering between the influence of modern, western ideas and traditional Asian values.
