Mangrove Music

The Caribbean island of Culebra lies between the English-speaking Virgin Islands and Spanish-speaking Puerto Rico. Like other islands in the Caribbean, it is located at a crossroads of national, regional and global exchanges. Musicians from Culebra are inspired by regional and global traditions when creating their distinct island music. This film follows two music groups from the island of Culebra. The Wiki Sound is a percussion trio that uses rhythms from various different regions of the Caribbean. The Municipal Band of Culebra is an orchestra that is entirely made up of steel drums, modelled on those of Trinidad. The film explores the similarities and differences between the two groups in order to highlight some of the processes and relationships that produce and reproduce Caribbean island identities. This film was shot in the course of a year’s doctoral fieldwork research.
